2018 USA Youth Nationals

I just finished my first ever US Youth fly fishing competition and I am excited to say I made the Team! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to compete against some incredibly talented anglers. Nationals took place in Bryson City, North Carolina and the sessions took place on four different rivers; the Upper and Lower Nantahala, as well as the Upper and Lower Cherokee. My first session was not ideal by any means. The temperature was 30 degrees and I took a spill in the river. My hands got so cold that I wasn't able to tie a fly on! In that session I finished with 4 fish and took a 7 out of 8. Despite my frustration about the unfortunate circumstances during my heat, I was able made up for it on the lower Nantahala. This session I landed 11 fish and took a 1.

The next day I did somewhat better on my morning session since I took a 4, but once again I was lucky enough to have a good afternoon heat and I took a 3. Those two afternoon sessions contributed to my success in the comp and I placed 13 out of 32 overall. In all honesty, I came into Nationals with low expectations, considering it was my first time fishing back east and my first comp, but I found a way to incorporate my western river experiences and utilize them in the comp.

The final night at the banquet the coaches announced the new 2018-2019 US Youth Fly Fishing Team members. When I heard my name called I was beyond shocked. It is difficult to describe how ecstatic, stunned and beyond thrilled I was to make the team. I am still in disbelief. I look am looking forward to seeing where this once in a lifetime opportunity takes me and would be honored to represent my country at worlds.
