I just completed my 4th year at the Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Expo.  I say this every year, but this year was my favorite. I came into this expo different than my previous years, as this was my first year as a member of the USA Youth Fly Fishing Team. The knowledge and new skills I've acquired in just a few months on the team were fresh in my mind and I enjoyed sharing these skills with other avid fly tiers as well as fisherman who are beginning their journey into the world of fly fishing. I was also fortunate to meet a...

All fisherman want to fish water that hardly ever gets fished and where trout never see artificial flies, but we can't always do that. Every once in a while you will find yourself fishing a section of water that gets fished by several fisherman a day. The trout become spooky, smart, and selective very fast. I am going to share some tips and strategies for fishing heavily pressured areas that will lead to greater success on the water.

I just finished my first ever US Youth fly fishing competition and I am excited to say I made the Team! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to compete against some incredibly talented anglers. Nationals took place in Bryson City, North Carolina and the sessions took place on four different rivers; the Upper and Lower Nantahala, as well as the Upper and Lower Cherokee. My first session was not ideal by any means. The temperature was 30 degrees and I took a spill in the river. My hands got so cold that I wasn't able to ti...

I just attended the Idaho US Youth Fly Fishing Team Clinic for the second time. I had an awesome time fishing with the other youth anglers and learning from the coaches.

The first day we had a conservation lesson and after the class we hit the river for a couple hours. After fishing we went back the dorms, had dinner, and tied flies until midnight. The next morning we got up and were on the river by nine. That morning was some of the best fishing I have ever had on the Bigwood during the summer. After two hours of...

I honored to once again be invited to the Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Expo as a featured fly tier. This year I arrived at the expo with entire new set of skills as I have spent the previous year learning to integrate European nymphing and fly tying into my "quiver" of techniques. As this was the year after the groundbreaking film Modern Nymphing was released, many of the other anglers I talked either have started, or were starting to take an interest in European Nymphing. While I certainly don't have the equival...

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to tie for the second time at the Western Idaho Fly Fishing Expo. This expo is one of my favorites. On the first day of the expo I  talked to the other tiers and explored the fishing and tying booths. Once again I had the opportunity to talk to the incredible fly tier Mark Borovatz. This year he taught me a bunch of fly fishing and tying techniques. I also got to meet the famous Al and Gretchen Beatty and they showed me their techniques for tying Parachute Adams an...

Grayling have always been on my list of fish I want to catch, and this weekend I was able to  catch not only one, but three Grayling. I started off my day Euro Nymphing the Lower Lost River with Silver Creek guide Sean Sullivan. I was fishing a double nymph rig with a GTI Caddis as my top fly and a Blowtorch as my dropper. After a successful morning with lots of big Rainbows, we moved to the Upper Lost in search of Grayling.

I just attended my first USA Youth Fly Fishing Team clinic this week in Ketchum, Idaho with 18 other youth fly fishers. On the first day of the clinic we had the opportunity to have a casting session with legendary Joe Humphreys. Mr. Humphreys taught his "bow and arrow" cast.

We spent the next forty eight hours of the clinic  on the Bigwood River Euro Nymphing with the team coaches. After our days of fishing on the Bigwood we would go back to the dorms for dinner and tie flies until midnight. During the tying sessions...

I have just attended my second year at the Idaho2Fly Derby near Boise, Idaho. This year I came prepared with a secret fly called the Morrish Mouse. At last year's Derby I had one Morrish Mouse in my box and I tied it to my setup and hammered the fish, until I lost it. This year I wasn't going to make the same mistake and I came prepared with several Morrish patterns. This year the Morrish Mouse worked so well I was able to get first place in the competition.

Idaho2Fly is a nonprofit organization th...
